Description
The driver airbag (steering wheel airbag) is the primary restraint device for the driver in frontal collisions. It is an integrated module containing the inflator, cushion and connector harness that mount into the centre of the steering wheel. This unit is supplied as a complete module in Alpaga Grey and is intended to replace a deployed or damaged driver airbag on compatible Citroën C8 vehicles.
Fitment
Designed For: Citroën C8 (first generation, approx. 2002–2014). Compatibility depends on steering wheel design, airbag connector type and color trim. Always verify product codes and the visual match with the original unit before installation.
Technical Information
- Manufacturer: Stellantis (Citroën)
- Model: Citroën C8
- Product Codes: 14001063YR, 4112HQ
- Other Numbers: Color Code HYR (Alpaga Grey)
Installation Recommendations
- Safety First: Airbag modules contain pyrotechnic components. Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the inflator or cushion.
- Disconnect Battery: Always disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 10 minutes (or follow the vehicle manufacturer’s specified wait time) before starting work to allow capacitors in the restraint system to discharge.
- Steering Wheel Position: Center the front wheels and mark the steering wheel position relative to the column before removal to preserve alignment.
- Removal/Installation: Remove the retaining screws/clips on the rear of the steering wheel to release the airbag. Carefully disconnect the airbag connector(s)—note any locking tabs—and lift the module away. When installing, connect the airbag harness securely, refit fasteners to the correct torque and restore battery power only after final checks.
- Inspect Related Components: Check the clock spring (spiral cable), steering column connectors and wiring for wear or damage. Replace any compromised parts to ensure system integrity.
- Post-Installation Check: After installation, perform the required system checks using diagnostic equipment to confirm that no faults remain in the supplemental restraint system.
Common Failure Causes
- Deployment in a Collision: The most common reason for replacing an airbag is previous deployment during an accident—deployed modules must be replaced.
- Electrical Faults: Corroded or damaged wiring, poor connector contacts or faults in the restraint system can cause the airbag light and loss of functionality.
- Physical Damage: Impact to the steering wheel, moisture ingress or improper removal/installation can damage the module or its connectors.
- Component Wear Or Environmental Effects: Long-term exposure to humidity or contaminants may affect connectors and wiring, leading to faults.
Notes
Airbags are safety-critical components. Replacement should be performed by a qualified technician or an experienced mechanic. Do not attempt to repair the inflator or cushion. After any airbag work, verify system integrity with appropriate diagnostic tools and follow Citroën/PSA recommended procedures.
